For over 20 years, Jon Bowermaster has pursued adventure with a passion. On every continent and ocean, Bowermaster epitomizes the ultimate explorer and observer of both nature and mankind. An author of 10 books and a dozen documentary films, Bowermaster has chronicled the health of the world’s seas and the lives of three billion people who live and depend on the planet’s coastlines. Bowermaster, a sixtime grantee of the National Geographic Society, has embarked on this daunting task in a very unusual way— in a kayak and frequently alone against the elements. In his famed OCEANS 8 project, Bowermaster sea kayaked around the world, one continent at a time over 10 years. The quest took Bowermaster to the heart of the Aleutian Islands, down the coast of North Vietnam, through the Tuamotu Atolls in French Polynesia, across the high plains of Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina, and up the wild coastline of Gabon in West Africa. He also explored Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, paddled halfway around Tasmania, and finished up by kayaking the length of the Antarctic Peninsula. The 8-part film series documenting the OCEANS 8 project won the 2008 “Best Ocean Travel Series” at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. A regular contributing writer for National Geographic, National Geographic Adventurer, The New York Times, and many more, Bowermaster has authored best-selling books such as Descending the Dragon: My Journey Down the Coast of North Vietnam, Alone Against the Sea, Birthplace of the Winds: Storming Alaska’s Island of Fire & Ice, Saving the Earth: A Citizen’s Guide to Environmental Action, and Over the Top of the World with famed Arctic explorer Will Steger. Bowermaster is an engaging speaker about each of his endeavors and he proves that we are all connected to nature whatever our culture or country.
